Portugal fifth in Europe by volume of new commercial centre openings

The global financial crisis has not stopped the rush to open commercial centres in Portugal. In the first half of the year Portugal was the fifth European country in terms of volume of area for newly opened commercial centres.
According to the European Shopping Centre Development, as study by the real estate consultants Cushman & Wakefield, in the first half of 2009 nearly 167 thousand square metres of commercial area were opened. In Europe, only Russia (with 578 thousand sq m), Italy (370 thousand), Turkey (284 thousand) and Poland (245 thousand) opened more space.
Until 2012 another 1.2 million square metres will be opened in Portugal of which about 40% is located in the greater Porto and greater Lisbon areas, according to Cushman & Wakefield.
